Nine Years!

>> Wednesday, January 30, 2008

As we are still receiving anniversary cards (quite a bit belated) I didn't think it was too late to mention that Damien and I celebrated our ninth anniversary at the beginning of this month. It turns out that January 2 may not have been the best time to get married if you want to have a nice, relaxing anniversary and celebrate it on time. But Uncle Joel was very gracious and babysat for 7 hours while we went to dinner (Caribbean Food) and a movie (There Will Be Blood). I think we decided that was the longest we had been without children since we had them. It blows my mind to think we've been married for nine years. We got married at 20 - and looking at 20-year olds now I wonder "were we like that?" I know so much has happened in our lives over these years I need to go back and write down the "big things" that happened each year - before I start to forget. I'm so lucky to have married my best friend and that we are still best friends. I'm blessed that I have a husband who would rather "hang out" with me than anyone else and can't wait to come home and spend time with his family. And most importantly I'm blessed to have a husband who is willing to give up a dream job, spend months raising support (the last thing he'd ever want to do and a huge hurdle when making the decision) and start a new career that comes with many "unknowns" because he is so committed to serving God with his life.

Marmey & Ba-bi

>> Monday, January 28, 2008

So a couple of weeks ago when I went to get Micaiah up from his nap he was holding his blanket and Barney (which was actually given to Orin at Christmas) in his hands. He wanted to hold on to them as I got him out and thus started his attachment to "Marmey" (Barney) & "Ba-bi" (blanket). Now, when he's tired he'll starting naming them and walking around to look for them. I've been trying to stop nursing Micaiah before naps for a while and these have really helped! He holds them as we sing before nap and although he's asked for milk a few times I can usually distract him by pointing to "ba-bi" and "marmey." Maybe soon he can give up the milk before bed. I find it so cute how much he loves them and I wonder how long it will last. Today I was sorting laundry and as I was walking towards the laundry room and saw the blanket I threw it into my basket. Micaiah saw me and started crying and saying "Ba-bi, ba-bi..." Guess he thought I was taking it away. Luckily it was clean and dry by nap-time.

Having Fun With Marmey & Ba-bi

Just after waking up from a nap.

Trying his hardest to walk around with them... It's not easy, especially for such a new walker!

It's Been A While

>> Saturday, January 26, 2008

I haven't really written much in a while so I want to jot down a few things that have been going on here.

Micaiah is finally walking. I find it funny that people comment on how it must be nice to have him crawling for so long (meaning because he can't get into as much as we would if he were walking). After having two kids who have walked late (Orin didn't walk until 15 months) I can say that there is not much difference. After crawling for over 6 months these kids are FAST. Micaiah can definitely crawl away much faster than he can walk! As far as getting into things, Micaiah has been able to easily go up and down stairs for months and can climb onto things I never would have thought he could. So in actuality unless your kid is just stationary at 16 months, I don' think there is much of a difference in them waiting.

We were really blessed on Sunday to receive a call from a Shepherd Group at our church (some churches call them community groups, or fellowship groups, etc...) saying that they have "adopted" us as their missionaries. Our church encourages our groups to adopt a missionary to pray for on a regular basis and financially support if possible. I'm still surprised when things like this happen. You would think by now that with all of the amazing things God has done over the past year in regards to prayer and financial support that we wouldn't be surprised anymore. But Damien's first thought (which is often his first thought) was "why us?" I still get in the "wow" stage for while. I guess it's good to still be shocked by things like this - I would never want to get to the point where I feel like we deserve it or not appreciate it. But in the same sense, I know that all we need is faith that God will provide what we need - why am I so shocked when God does what he promised to do. We were able to share at their group last night (Wednesday). The people where really welcoming which always makes it easier to share your heart with strangers. We're not sure the extent of financial support right now (if any) but we know they will be praying for us weekly which is even better.

Since New Years Eve Orin has been obsessed with "fireworks". Last July 4th we found out that Orin is VERY frightened of fireworks. This came as a complete surprise to us since he had never been scared of anything before. When New Years Even rolled around we were curious to see if he would still be scared. If anything it was worse. What made it even worse was that one of Mimie's neighbors seemed to be throwing a major party with some incredible (and very loud) fireworks. The poor guy couldn't sleep with all the noise and would freak out if we opened the door to walk outside. Since that night, he has mentioned fireworks every day (literally). At first, every time we walked outside at night he'd say "There's no fireworks," - I guess to remind himself that fact. Even now he'll do that, but he's also begun pretending there are fireworks in the house. He'll lay on the bed, and look at the ceiling and say "Look at all of the fireworks." A couple of nights ago we all must have laid there for 30 minutes and counted the imaginary fireworks as they shot into the sky (noises and all thanks to daddy). We recently watched a video of fireworks on a friends blog and Orin was very interested in them. I'm very curious to find out what happens when July rolls around.

Micaiah is doing so much better with his separation anxiety. Looking back at his 1st year calendar it started around 9 months. I can't believe it has lasted this long. It seemed to peak from about 12-14 months. He still often gives out a couple of cries as we pull into the church parking lot or the gym parking lot (the only two places he is away from me). And even though he cries about 95% of the time when I leave, he stops in about 30 seconds. It is so nice not to have to be concerned the entire service (or workout) that I will be called because my poor baby has been screaming hysterically for 20 minutes. He is down to nursing only 1-2 times/day and I have a feeling when he finally lets that go he will be more apt to being away from me. On a side note, I find it incredibly amusing that Micaiah seems to think that I am his - and his alone. I can't cuddle with Damien or hold Orin without him getting jealous, coming up to me and trying to get me to hold him.

We're still at 70% of our needed financial support. Actually, we've had a few people begin to support us but we don't know the amount yet (we only get statements monthly) so I think we're a little above that. It's been very interesting to see how it all happens in spurts. I'll start to get a little concerned that we've hit a plateau and God will do something to completely knock me off of my feat.

We had more sickness this week. This and last winter have seemed to be stocked full of it. Damien stayed home on Wednesday with cold/flu yuckiness. Working hard Thursday and Friday ensured that he hasn't gotten better. Orin has been having a hard time sleeping because of a pretty bad cough and I think I may be going for a world record for the number of times I wiped Micaiah's nose in a day. I think poor Micaiah has a sore throat has well because he often has his hand stuck way into his mouth and I often hear him making some pretty strange noises. I was sorry to miss church tonight because I don't want the kids to spread it around. Since I seem to always be the healthy one I'm sort of looking forward to my next illness so I can be taken care of. :-)

Pictures From The Week

>> Friday, January 25, 2008

A couple of pictures I took this week that I couldn't resist sharing.

Do you think he could fit more toys in that little tub?

Our dining room table for the past year.

My little handsome boy after his second hair cut. I held him on my lap but he cried as soon as he saw the woman. I think he thought I was going to leave him there. We popped a sucker into his mouth and he was pretty good from there. He teared up a few times but just sat there and let her do her thing. His hair is a little too thin and "old man looking" (uncle Joel calls him Grandpa) to even consider having it long.

It's Cold Out There!

It's 13 degrees out and a low of 10 is predicted! It hasn't been this cold in a long time. I'm just thankful that I live in a time where we have heaters!

Both Orin and Micaiah love to sing this right now. I had to get Orin singing it on video. He's singing softly so you might need to turn up the volume :-)

We Have A Walker!

>> Thursday, January 17, 2008

Last Friday, something must have clicked in Micaiah's mind. Although I'm convinced he's been "able" to walk for some time, he has had no desire to do so. He would take a few steps if Damien and I sit and have him walk back and forth, but left on his own he was perfectly happy to crawl. Although he still crawls about 50% of the time (I think that part of it is because we're in such a small space and a few toys on the floor will make the room an obstacle course) he walks amazing well for only have a few days under his belt. Saturday is his 16 month birthday so it's about time! Here is a video of my proud boy!

Our Little Picasso

>> Friday, January 11, 2008

This past "semester" Orin and I (along with Micaiah) took a "Preschool Picasso" class at the local rec center. Once great thing about this area is that there are so many activities that are offered through the county - at a very reasonable price. It was hard to choose which one to do so we decided on an art class. Orin loves music and we thought about doing one of those, but we listen to music constantly at home so I thought we should expose him to something new. I've been pretty bad about the "crafting" with him. I would love to do it but it's just not really possible in our current living situation. Plus we don't have any room to store art supplies. So I figured a class would do the trick. The class was for 2's & 3's but they were gracious to let me tote Micaiah along. He was great and as long as I had plenty of snacks he would just sit in his stroller and eat during the 45 minute class (my secret was to not feed him breakfast so he'd be nice and hungry!). Orin really loved it. The teacher was nice and fun and creative with her activities. We painted, glued and used glitter which Orin called "sprinkles" (his favorite part). We're looking forward to taking some other class next term.

Update: Since I wrote this post about a month ago (it took me that long to take the time to get a picture of the boy with his masterpieces) we started a new class. We're taking "Wiggles & Giggles." We went our first class Thursday. It is 45minutes of singing, fun activities and and obstacle course (trampoline, balance beam, etc...). Orin loved it. Micaiah did great to. I strapped him in the stroller, parked him along the wall and loaded him up with snacks. Micaiah really enjoyed watching the kids. He even clapped his hands during the songs and squealed during some activities. I'd love to do a class with both of them but there aren't any class for both of their age ranges. I do like the fact that I get to spend some one-on-one time with Orin.

Pre-Christmas Fun

>> Wednesday, January 9, 2008

Since much of the "holiday season" is about traditions, I'm trying to keep my tradition of posting things about a month after they happen. :-) As our family is so young we haven't really had the opportunity to establish any traditions - at least for more than a year or two which I wouldn't really count as "tradition". It's also a little hard to make our own traditions when each year we celebrate with our extend family in New Orleans. So we've adopted a few traditions that we celebrated growing up (cutting down our own tree, etc...) and we'll try to create some of our own. All of that to say, we didn't do much this year! :-) I'd really like to celebrate Advent. But in our current living situation, much of that would be pretty difficult. We literally don't have room for a wreath and candle and other Advent celebrations. And my lack of planning as well as most of our Christmas "stuff" being buried in storage kept our activities to a minimum. But we found the time to do a few things as a family. I bought some sticky window decorations and the kids had a blast putting them on the windows - and for the next three weeks enjoyed taking them down and putting them back up almost daily. Orin would stack them onto Micaiah's back and call it his backpack. We also broke out the Christmas CDs (which we had a hard time convincing Orin were better than his normal music), checked-out holiday related books from the library and watched some Christmas videos. Orin loved reading through the Christmas story quite a few times during our nightly devotions. His favorite parts were the angles. He talks about them almost daily and will say "Look, I see an angle up in the sky," or "I don't see any angles right now." We also went to the Festival of Lights at a local park. It's about a 2.5 mile drive-thru light show. For those of you in New Orleans, it's similar to City Park's Christmas in the Oaks (how it used to be, at least). We drove with the kids sitting in the front with us. They absolutely LOVED it. At the end there was a "Holiday Village" which was pretty much a small amusement park with Christmas lights (high prices and all). We scrapped up enough change (we literally paid for the tickets in change) and Orin rode on two ride. Lastly, we went through a Walk Through Bethlehem. It was a huge production put on by the Seventh Day Adventist Headquarters in Maryland. It was a lot of fun for the kids. They give you fake money at the beginning and you can buy things along the way at various parts of the "city." We also had to pay taxes along the way and bribe a couple of guards. :-) Although we bought tickets for the 7pm show we didn't get in until 8:30. It was a long wait in the auditorium but there were different performances. I was a little disappointed by it, but I'm not sure why. I was hoping for some live animals. In fact we talked it up to Orin by tell him we'd see camels and sheep, etc... Luckily, he was completely satisfied with the fake ones.

Death of a Hard Drive

A couple of nights ago our computer started acting a little strange. The Internet was running slow and we were getting a few strange errors in a couple of programs. Damien began immediately trying to figure out what was happening once I mentioned it to him. For a while he was stumped. The computer kept locking up and he restarted it over and over. After a couple of hours he started to suspect that it might be a virus or hard drive issue. His first thought was that he better get things backed-up. He copied the "necessities" to our secondary hard drive. As they finished copying over the computer locked up. When Damien tried to restart it, it wouldn't boot up - the hard drive was dead! I don't even want to think of what a close call it was. I had almost all of our pictures backed-up but almost none of our documents - which go back to when were in high school. I'm so lucky to have such a genius of a husband! We've never had a hard drive go out on us - ever! It is definitely a lesson learned and we'll be more vigilant about backing up from now on.
