The Renaissance Festival

>> Sunday, September 30, 2007

Sometimes on weekends we like to just stay at home and relax and sometimes we like to spend the day out doing something as a family. Sometimes we go out to a park and BBQ, sometimes we go Downtown, and often we'll go to one of the many local festivals. When we decide to go out Damien usually looks on the Washington Post website for happenings in the area. One of the great parts about living in this area is there is almost always something to do. During the Spring and Fall there are always lots of festivals. Yesterday Damien noticed the Maryland Renaissance Festival was going on. It lasts for about nine weeks. If you've never been to a Renaissance Festival, they are amazing! There are TONS of people and the buildings, costume and shows are great. Damien had been to many as a child and has a lot of great memories. The first one I had ever been to was when Damien took me in Arizona. The one here in Maryland has been running for something like 28 years. I guess Damien just didn't think of going the last few years we've lived here. The kids were great all day, even without naps. Micaiah just loves to be pushed around in the stroller and look at people and things. Orin is just about the opposite and loved walking the entire time and picking up sticks and rocks. We saw a play, a sword swallowing act, a show called "Fight School" and a Jousting tournament which Orin loved because of the horses. Amazingly, with thousands of people there, we ran into to people we knew: Matt & Karin Vile with their kids and someone from the Family Practice we go to. We had some yummy and surprisingly inexpensive food and ice cream. It was a really fun day together.

You can't go to a Renaissance Festival without eating a Turkey Leg. Orin really enjoyed his. For some reason people found it really cute/funny and were even taking pictures. Micaiah was on Damien's back while we ate. He'd raise his hand up every time he was ready for another piece of food. A lot of people found him entertaining as well and there were laughs coming from the table next to us. The fun of having such cute kids!

Watching the Jousting Tournament

Daddy couldn't help getting a sword for him and Orin to "fight" with. I wasn't necessarily thrilled but Orin really LOVED it. We keep it out of sight except for when he and daddy can play together.

Orin's New "Dog House"

>> Wednesday, September 26, 2007

I'm sitting here typing with two kids taking a nap - both without pacifiers! Damien and I have been dreading the day we decided to take Orin's passy away for over a year. Since birth, Orin has been very attached to it. Surprisingly to us, Micaiah has not, although he has used one since he was born. As Orin has gotten older he has gotten more and more attached. So our main motivation for getting rid of it right now was that the longer we wait, the harder it would be for him to adjust to sleeping without it. So, a week ago Sunday (September 16) we attempted his first nap without it. We also decided that we should take Micaiah's away so that Orin wouldn't have to suffer through watching Micaiah suck on one when he couldn't. And since Micaiah hasn't been very attached (lately he just throws it on the ground when we try to give it to him) we thought it would be an easy adjustment. For Micaiah's morning nap I nursed him as I always do before naps and he went down without a hitch. When it was time for the afternoon naps, we decided Orin should go first. There are so many ideas out there for taking away passy's - e.g. taking it and giving it away, cutting off the tip, having the child throw it into the trash, etc... - but we decided we were just going to tell Orin that it was time to start sleeping with no passy's and if he took a nap without one we would go to the store and he could pick out whatever toy he wanted. As we read to him, rocked and sang before his nap, he asked for it quite a few times. And as soon as we put him down in bed he started to cry and tried to get up. We quickly shut the door and he continued to cry. After about 15 minutes we went in there to talk. I tried to lay on the floor next to the bed but he just wanted to lay on the floor with me and was just too excited to go to sleep. He asked for the pack-n-play so we brought it into his room. He got in it and we gave him books -but after about 30 minutes of reading he still couldn't sleep and he started calling for us. I think we would have let it go on for longer but Micaiah needed a nap and Damien wasn't feeling well and needed a nap too. And when you only have two rooms and three people trying to nap it doesn't work well. So I took Orin on a walk while Damien and Micaiah slept. Orin asked if we could go get his new toy and I reminded him that he didn't take a nap but if he took a nap the next day we would get one. I have to say that after this first day one thing I realized was that I was not committed to taking the passy away and decided that if he didn't take a nap for 3 days he was getting it back. :-) I really enjoying having that hour or two during the day to myself to get stuff done and to re-energize. So that night, after not having taken a nap Orin was pretty tired. As Damien rocked him we could tell that he looked a little worried. His hands were in his mouth the entire time and he knew he would have to sleep with no passy. He cried as we laid him down but after just a minute or two he was out! Thank you Lord! So on Monday I reminded Orin that if he took a nap we would go get a toy when he woke up. I even threw in a "You can watch Barney and have a cookie when you get up too!" I gave him a bunch of books in bed to read before going to sleep. He didn't cry but 30 minutes later he was still awake, walking around the room, and reading. But 15 minutes later it was done! He was asleep! These are times as a parent that I am reminded that no matter what I do it's God that decides how things go with our children. I know it's only by God's grace that Orin fell asleep. We actually had to wake him up from his nap since it had taken him so long to fall asleep we didn't want him to sleep too late. When daddy came home we went to Toys-R-Us. Orin was so excited he couldn't decide. So we picked out five things and he was finally able to choose a Little People School Bus. But then as we were walking on another aisle he saw the doll houses. When we were in New Orleans he had a blast playing with Aunt Emily's old doll house. So we put the doll house next to the school bus and told him to choose. He emphatically said "I want the dog house!" So, he may not have the correct name for it, but he knew what he wanted. He and daddy put it together when we got home and he LOVES it. Actually, Micaiah really likes it too. Orin is funny because he'll put the people in the bath and have them at the computer but he'll also have them get on the roof and jump off. He's still all boy! So since that first nap Orin has been able to take every nap. My biggest issue has been getting them both to take naps at the same time. I normally put Micaiah down and then put Orin down about 20 minutes later once Micaiah is sleeping. But without the passy, Orin takes longer to go to sleep. Unfortunately he is usually restless or wants to read books which has waken up Micaiah every day. A few days I've let Micaiah take his nap before I put Orin down but I really miss having even 30minutes to myself. Monday I even tried to put Orin down first and then Micaiah. But that back-fired. Micaiah often cries for about 15 seconds after I put him down (which he did in this instance) and Orin woke up. But today I finally got them down together. Micaiah was pooped because he didn't have a morning nap and I sat at the door and every time Orin made noise I went in. It's good to have some time to myself. Sleeping time is definitely one of the hardest parts of living in such a small space. But I'm so proud of my little boy - he is so adaptable and surprises us every time! Interspersed are pictures of Orin playing with his "Dog house" and him sleeping during his first nap with no passy!

Micaiah's 1st Birthday Party

>> Tuesday, September 25, 2007

While I was in New Orleans we had a birthday party for Micaiah - well, it was actually cupcakes and a Happy Birthday song tacked onto a Labor Day celebration. But thank goodness we did it since we didn't do anything on his actual birthday because I was sick.

I knew this kid had a big mouth!

"What in the world is going on here?"
I LOVE this picture. I can't tell if he looks like he's doing something guilty or if he's saying, "Don't even think about taking this cupcake away!"
I think Zach enjoyed the cupcakes more than anyone else. :-)
"My tummy works just as well as a napkin."
I think he's trying to look like daddy with that goatee.
"Ooo, I'm not so sure about this ice cream."
"Let's see if I can eat this without using my hands!"

Fun with the Daspits

>> Sunday, September 23, 2007

Here are some pictures of our time with the Daspits...

As you can see, Orin felt very comfortable in Mimie's new house right from the start.

We went to the Lousisana Children's Museum. The kids had a blast! I wish we had one close to us. Orin's favorite part had to be the trolley at the Mr. Roger's Neighborhood exhibit. He sat there for a lot time just watching it go back and forth.

Ah, thank goodness New Orleans has a lot of water or everyone would melt in the heat :-)

Orin, Sam, & Zach played incredibly well together. Orin has friends here but there seems to be a special bond between cousins.

You can't have too many kisses from Mimie!

My tired little baby!
One night we let the kids lay on Mimie's bed and watch a movie. It's amazing the things they can get into even though there isn't a lot in the room. But they actually sat there through the entire thing. It was fun listening to little laughs coming from the room every once in a while.

Fun with the Reillys

Here are the first of the pictures from my trip to New Orleans. More to come...

The first night Orin cried when I put him to bed (which is VERY unusual for him). I thought he might want me to lay with him, but I wanted to get in a shower before going to bed so Pops said he could lay in bed with him. When I came out they were sleeping and it was very cute! :-)

Pops started an unhealthy yet very fun tradition each night we were there. He and the kids would sit on the kitchen floor and eat ice cream right out of the container. Sometimes he even let the kids stick their hand or tongue right in!

Orin ran around the kitchen and played in between bites but Micaiah didn't leave Pops' side. They are definitely pals for life!
A couple of nights Aunt Emily got in on the action and brought the key - sprinkles! Orin was so excited about them and loved eating them by themselves. Time out! Orin LOVED playing with Aunt Emily's old doll house. It was so cute to see the scenarios he came up with. I love how Orin insists on lining things up in a strait line.
Talking to Daddy on the web cam. Orin was a little confused at first but quickly realized it was him and didn't want to end it.

Our New Computer

>> Thursday, September 20, 2007

After having our old computer for over five years, it was time for a new one. The funny things is that even though it was so old is still ran faster than almost any other computer I've used. Of course, that had nothing to do with me but with my genius of a husband. Sadly our computer had to go. For the last six months we've had trouble with it overheating. The side panel is constantly off with a fan blowing directly on it - and we were getting to the point where that wasn't able to control the heat. It was pretty funny to just look inside and see the quarter inch of dust on everthing. On top of that, our 40GB hard dive has been "yelling" at us saying that it's out of room. After almost a year of that we've run out of things to delete. Luckily Damien is very resourceful when it comes to computers (surprise, surprise) and was able to buy new parts for less than even the cheapest Dell out there as well as use some of the parts from the old computer. Orin had a blast "helping". He loved to just take everything out of the tool bag and name things as he did and then put them all back in. He loved our little electric screwdriver so we left the old computer out for a few days so he could practice using it. :-)

Ugh

>> Wednesday, September 19, 2007

Well, Micaiah's first birthday didn't turn out exactly as planned - not that anything big was planned. Last night around 10 I started feeling sick. It came out of nowhere - fever, aching, sore throat. To make things even worse I took some medicine around midnight, not realizing that it had caffeine - so I got about 2 hours of sleep total. By the morning I was worse. Luckily I have a wonderful husband who stayed home from work to take care of the kids. He even took me to the Doctor because I was worried to drive the way I felt. Thankfully, I have strep throat. I say "thankfully" because I can take antibiotics whereas if it was the flu I'd just have to sit and wait. After the appointment Damien dropped me off at home and took the kids to lunch at Chick-fil-A. After lunch Micaiah went down for a nap and Damien took Orin to the library which was one of my plans for the day. Damien was great and tried to keep the kids quiet as much as possible so I could nap - and that's not easy since our bed is in the living room. Our one plan for Micaiah's birthday was to bake cupcakes and sing happy birthday at Bible Study tonight. That is on hold until next Wednesday. It's a little sad that his first birthday ended up this way but the good thing is that he won't remember it! Another good thing is that I'm probably more likely to remember it - thinking back I don't remember what the day was like on Orin's actually birthday.

A Crazy Beginning To A Wonderful Year

>> Tuesday, September 18, 2007

I'm sitting here in the bathroom with Micaiah in the bathtub thinking back to exactly a year ago. I had gone to the Doctor today and I was 4cm dilated and 80% effaced. But my last ultrasound had shown that I had very low amniotic fluid which was a decrease from the week prior and my Doctor was pushing me to be induced. That was definitely not my ideal birthing situation but I told her I'd do it on Thursday if I hadn't delivered by then. It's 9pm right now and last year at this time I still wasn't having contractions or major signs of labor. But by 12:30am they had started. I was somewhat in denial at first (which I think a lot of women are when labor begins) but I quickly realized that it must be the real thing. I spent about 30 minutes in the bathroom and then laid on the bed so Damien could help me relax during the contractions. Even though I didn't take any classes either time, I think we had a better plan to just have Damien count and massage through the contractions. The only problem was that it worked too well. I didn't realize how far into labor I actually was. By 1:45am I could tell my water was about to break - I know it sounds strange but I started having the same feeling during the contractions that I did right before my water broke with Orin. I can't explain the feeling but a sort of tingling and almost being able to tell the "bubble" was going to pop. And as we started out the door, and I sat on the couch to have a contraction before heading to the car, it broke. It was definitely much less fluid than with Orin so I guess the ultrasounds were correct (I know how subjective they can be with size and fluid levels so I wasn't convinced it was low). Well, as soon as my water broke I knew we were in trouble. We got in the car - Damien in the back seat with me and my mom driving. The contractions were coming every couple of minutes. Luckily my contractions with both labors never lasted more than about 45 seconds. About 10 minutes down the road I could feel Micaiah's head in the birth canal. I knew he was coming fast. I told Damien I thought he was coming out do Damien had me take my pants off just in case (don't want a baby born in your pants!) But he said he didn't see a head so we were ok. I remember I was just thinking, "I can't believe this is actually going to happen in the car." We had even joked about it. During this entire drive Damien was telling my mom to go faster and faster and when we hit a red light to just run it. Thank goodness it was 2:30am. We were also going a different way to the hospital than we had originally told my mom so Damien was having to give her directions. But, my mom was having a hard time hearing, so Damien was having to yell them to her from the back seat - this just escalated things so she'd yell back if she had a question or to confirm a turn. I think I would have laughed if I wasn't in such pain but I was just thinking I wish they would shut up. We finally made it to the hospital. I had taken my shoes off with my pants so I was walking in barefoot. They offered me a wheelchair but at first I said no...there was no way I could sit down with the baby almost out. So I instead knelt down in it facing backward. So they wheeled me into the elevator with my butt sticking up in the air (yes, and my pants had been put back on before we got out of the car). The lobby guard sent us to the wrong floor at first. I think the nurses behind the counter had a good laugh at the site of me in the wheelchair. When we got to the right floor I guess they could tell that I was very close because the nurses sprang into action - and if you've ever had a baby you know that most of the time the nurses are pretty doubtful that you "actually" in labor until they can check you out. We got in the room and I laid on the bed. There were about 5 nurses scrambling around. I'm not exactly sure what they were doing but they were all telling me to do a different thing. "Lie still ", "move here", "lift your butt", "scoot down", "make a fist", "lie still." All the while they were asking me questions such as, "What # baby is this," "What pregnancy is this," "How far along are you." I remember telling them I was group B strep positive (just meaning that they needed to give me antibiotics at least 4 hours before giving birth - I knew that wasn't going to happen.) As soon as I laid down I just remember a nurse saying, "Ok, baby's head is right there." I remember feeling a little relieved because I would have felt really stupid if I was only like 7cm or something. Another thing I remember is one nurse attempting to stick an IV into my hand. It wasn't very easy for her since she would tell me to stay still and another nurse would tell me to move. The only other thing I remember was a nurse trying to pick up his heart beat on the monitor. I thought she looked a little worried and I didn't hear anything. I was suddenly really worried and asked if everything was ok. She said "Everything is fine," but I'm still not sure if she saw a heart beat or was just trying to make me feel better. But about 30 seconds after lying down, Micaiah's head came out! The nurse trying to do the IV threw down the equipment and said, "Oh, I give up!" What a relief! He came so fast I really thought I was going to split in two. His body came out in the same contraction. It was over! He was born right onto the bed since they hadn't had time to break it down. I was obviously still in my clothes, the Doctor hadn't made it in, and I had never pushed (think goodness or it would have happened somewhere bedsides the hospital room). I'm just glad the nurse never told me "Don't push" or I might have said something I'd regretted (just joking). It was great because Micaiah cried right away and they let me hold him for quite a while (with Orin I held him for about 10 seconds but since he wasn't crying the took him.) The doctor made it in time for the placenta and to tell me that amazingly I hadn't torn. I was in shock. Damien and my mom were both laughing and saying "I can't believe it, I can't believe it." I was just glad he was ok. He looked so adorable and his head was pretty perfect since he came out so quickly. A little later as the nurse was doing all of the paperwork that is usually done as you check in before the baby is born, we laughed at questions such as "What are your plans for labor," "Do you want pain medication," and all the other questions irrelevant now that he was here. All-in-all it was a wonderful birth and I was definitely smitten from the beginning. My one regret is that by the time my mom got the video camera started his head was out. Oh well. But he's here and this year has flown by. He has the cutest mouth and the most adorable chubby cheeks! He gives GREAT kisses. Micaiah is such a sweet, sensitive baby and I'm so looking forward to being a part of his life! I just pray that I'll be a godly mother to him and somehow, by God's grace, raise him to be a godly man.
