Welcoming 2011!

>> Saturday, January 1, 2011

Well, we were quite busy welcoming 2011. We went over to friends’ house for dinner. We had yummy turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and more. It was yummy! And also special because a lot of those ingredients cannot be purchased here so people were using their very limited stash! I hate that I can’t cook and contribute…so I just brought the drinks.

The kids were so brave and after a lot of coaxing (and bribing) we got both Orin and Micaiah to throw “poppers” AND hold sparklers!! If you’ve ever been around my kids when fireworks are going on you’ll know that is a huge step for them.
Of course, once they did it once and realized they weren’t going to be seriously injured they were all about it. So glad they finally had fun around fireworks. We set off two lanterns (apparently they are also a huge hit at New Years - I thought it was only Loy Krathong.)
We left around 9pm. Damien knew he was starting to get sick on Thursday so by Friday evening he was just ready to go home and to bed. I dropped him and Sora off and went to another party we were invited to. It was with a lot of people we hadn’t met so I was looking forward to meeting more people – a lot of them are not with SIL but have kids at CMIS where Orin will be going to school. Many of them also live in our new neighborhood so it was great to find out more about things around there (like food!).
The boys watched Veggie Tales with other kids and I got to just hang out. Later we all roasted marshmallows and shared our sparklers and stayed until 11:30. The boys were definitely getting tired at that point! We went back home to get Damien out of bed so we could bring in the New Year together.
We decided to go up to the roof. Wow, the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. There were just as many lanterns in the sky as Loy Krathong…but there were fireworks EVERYWHERE. We’re up on the 12th floor in a very central part of the city and you could turn an entire 360 degrees and see continuous fireworks.
I was asking Damien why this is so much more crazy than in the US (or at least in NOLA where we have always spent New Years), and he reminded me that the US would be the same way if Fireworks were both legal (which it is here) and very very very cheap (also how it is here). It was pretty loud and Micaiah was scared.
Right at about midnight Orin said he couldn’t hold his pee any longer. We sent him to the corner of the roof. Luckily I see kids relieving themselves in all sorts of places here so I don’t mind letting the boys doing it on occasion.
As we were about to leave the roof, we heard the loudest boom I’ve ever heard and then huge sparks everywhere. I large firework had landed on the roof about 20 feet away from us. Now that was SCARRY. There were lots of people all over the roof and it amazingly landed on the one area where no one was standing.
The boys stayed up another 30 or so minutes. They were TIRED today and we were definitely regretting letting them stay up so late. I’m thinking next year we may just put them to bed! I’m not sure it’s worth bad moods the entire next day!

It was a nice way to bring in the new year. We’re looking forward to this new year. 2010 was a very exciting and special but also a very tough year. We’re praying things are a little more low key this year!

Our gingerbread neighborhood

>> Monday, February 8, 2010

Ok, this is finally my last holiday post. I am SO behind. Now I have all of our super bowl fun to post too. Luckily I didn't take a ton of pictures in January. I really want to be totally caught up before we leave Thursday to go to Korea but I'm sure I'll have tons to post while we're there!

Aunt Crystal got a great Ginger Bread "neighborhood" for the kids to put together on New Years Day. They all had a lot of fun putting it all together and eating it.

Aunt Christina was a big help.

Caiah was very meticulous in his work. All of the different candies were sorted and in their own little sections.

Caiah admiring his completed house.

Orin was very serious about his work but wasn't quite as organized as Micaiah.

Also proud of his house.

Part of the roof fell off. I love his little pouty face.

Close-up of Orin's house.

Micaiah's house.

Ah, ready for the first bite!

How We Brought In the New Year

>> Thursday, January 1, 2009

I know I haven't posted about Christmas; I have so many pictures (and still have more to get from my sis-in-law) so I'll just talk about New Years Eve first. I'm starting to wonder when we'll have a new year's eve without a child scared out of his mind. Orin has been scared of fireworks since I can remember. Last New Years Eve the people who lived across the street from Mimie (Damien's mom) thought that they could give the city of New Orleans a professional fireworks show from their front yard. Orin was up to 2am because he was so scared of the noise outside. Any time we opened the door he FREAKED! We had him watching a movie on the laptop with the head phones on to try to drown out the noise. This year he has been very attune to what is going on outside. He has been telling us every day that he is scared of fireworks. A few days ago we went for a walk. Fireworks went off in the distance every so often. I thought he would have a problem and want to go back inside but he suggested to Aunt Christina that every time they heard one go off they should say, "Who goes there?" I have no idea where that came from, but it worked. It was how he coped with it. Because of that, we had high hopes for New Years. We decided to put the headphones on him and play music to drown out the banging. One street over from my parents house usually had a lot going on so about 15 minutes until midnight we walked over. Orin was doing well and the music was really helping. Well, about 2 minutes until midnight Damien started to think it wasn't such a good idea. When midnight came, the noise would really get crazy and he was afraid he would freak. He suggested we should have stayed on the front porch or at least closer to the house so we could go inside quickly. Well, he was right. Midnight came, and so did the crying and screaming. Since Micaiah loves to copy Orin, he decided that he was deathly afraid of fireworks too. I got two quick pictures in before Damien took him back to the house. In the first one you can see Damien holding the CD player. Orin has a worried look on his face and Nina (my mom) is trying to convince him that the fireworks are very pretty and that there is nothing to be scared of. The second picture is when Orin decided that there IS something to be scare of. The third is the just a close-up of Orin's face in the second picture. Oh, well. Maybe next year! The best part of the night was when we got back home Orin fell asleep on me (that hasn't happened in a LONG time although we often take naps together). :-)
