Stair Play

>> Friday, May 4, 2007

With such a small place that we are living in, Orin enjoys finding new ways to play on the stairs. He enjoys putting his toys on the stairs and throwing them down. This day at nap time he got his blanket from his bed and said he wanted to nap there. It was nice because he spent a lot of time one day practicing walking down the stair forward. It wasn't too scary since there are only a few stairs so it wouldn't be too far to fall.

Orin's February Calendar

Some of the things Orin was saying and doing in February (yes, I'm a little late with the post.)

  1. Orin can count from 1 to 10 on his own.
  2. If someone says “Bye Orin”, Orin says back to them “Bye Orin”.
  3. Orin loves to declare “Baby Slezen (sleeping)” or “Baby awake” or “Baby wakin’ up”.
  4. Loves to hold something over his eyes and say “bok-a-goo” (peek-a-boo)
  5. Says “pee-pee-poo-poo” almost every time he poops and usually wants his diaper changed right away.
  6. Will often take us and pull our clothes to bring us to where he wants us to go (if we don’t understand what he is saying)
  7. If he wants a nap he’ll often to his room and find his passys on his own. If he doesn’t want a nap he’ll throw his passys out of the crib and say “all done passy
  8. Always wants us to play his music in the car and says “music on” as soon as we get in.
  9. After a song ends he’ll often say “all done” and continue saying it louder and louder until we repeat “all done”
  10. Pretty good at singing “Twinkle, Twinkle”, “ABCs” and “Jesus Loves Me”. Also tries to sing other songs.
  11. We often put lotion on Orin’s face because it is dry and Orin is pretty obsessed with it. He calls it “medno” and always asks for it.
  12. Sometimes when I yell out to call Damien (or Damien does to me) Orin will repeat and call us by our first name.
  13. Does all of the motions to “Itsy, Bitsy, Spider”.
  14. Calls Ed Wilson’s mom “gee-ma” (meaning Grandma)
  15. Says “hold you mommy” or “hold you daddy” when he wants to be picked up.
  16. LOVES Micaiah and still often kisses him out of the blue.
  17. If you ask him what mommy’s name is he says “you.” He says that if you ask that for anyone’s name.
  18. He loves grapes and calls them “baackes.”
  19. When we sing to him before bed he sometimes likes to try to put his passy in our mouth and then he cracks up when we turn away.
  20. Loves to sit and have us read to him. He could do it for hours.

Teething Trouble

>> Thursday, May 3, 2007

Micaiah finally cut his first tooth! After weeks of fussiness and drool galore it finally poked it's way through. Although I'm happy that he already seems to be feeling better, it is another sad reminder that he's not a newborn anymore. Cutting that first tooth is like the final step from being a newborn into infancy. I just hope the next few teeth aren't has painful as this one has been.

Conversations3 Follow-up

>> Friday, April 27, 2007

Conversations was an amazing ministry. It's hard to know how many people became believers as a result of it or how many seeds were planted, but we heard some amazing stories before the week was even over. It was a CRAZY week but incredibly worth it. Monday was the smallest attendance with only about 250 people...but we were expecting it since it was the NCAA championship. Each night saw more people and by Thursday and Friday we were well over 600. There were soooo many people involved in the ministry to make it run smoothly. Dinner was prepared each night for the cast, free desert and coffee were given to the hundreds of people who came each night. It was definitely difficult to be at the church from 5 to 10pm for five nights in a row-especially for the boys. By the end of the week Micaiah had begun turning into a mama's boy. I think he really got sick of being passed around. Orin did great despite the fact that he had the croup episode during the week. Damien was able to come on Monday and Friday and really enjoyed the "show". I had a blast having my hair and make-up done. (So much 'stage' make-up that friends who came to see the show hardly recognized me!) Although I hope that we will have already moved to Dallas to take our assignment by next April, if we're around I am looking forward to being involved in it again...that is, if I can convince Damien to let me :-)

Driving Without A License

>> Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Orin's best friend Skye got this great car as a gift. Orin has had a blast a couple of times out riding with her.

Orin was a little hesitant at first (and held tight to Barney), but very quickly started having a great time.

When it was Orin's turn he didn't really know what to do. He couldn't reach the pedal so Skye controlled the accelerator and Orin steered - if you can call it steering. Often times he would just let go, sit back and relax but Skye would continue moving. When we'd tell him to grab the wheel he would lean over the side of the car and touch the tire. :-) We'd have to step in to keep them from hitting a parked car or the curb.

Mardi Gras in Virginia

>> Monday, April 16, 2007

Since Orin won't have the opportunity to grow up attending Mardi Gras each year (I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing) it's nice when Grandmas and Cousins are thoughtful enough to send some beads for him to play with. I don't know what it is but kids LOVE beads. Orin was having such fun this day I couldn't resist taking a few pictures! If we are in Dallas by Mardi Gras next year we'll make it a point to drive down to New Orleans and bring Orin to his first parade. I'm sure he'll have a blast.

First Food...well, sort of

>> Sunday, April 15, 2007

A couple of weeks ago, around Micaiah's six month birthday, we realized that it was already time to try out some sold foods. Our experience with Orin was, what we though, relatively unexciting. We put him in his high chair, got him striped down to his diaper (we had been told it was bound to be messy) and made sure he had a bib covering most of his body. Well, the experience was pretty uneventful. We gave him rice cereal and the child scarfed it down as if he hadn't eaten in weeks. Not one bit of food came out of his mouth. And to this day, pretty much everything we give him he will eat. Since Orin was our only experience thus far, we sort of assumed Micaiah's first solids would go the same way. I mean, he had been very interested any time we ate or drank would sometimes even whine because he wanted some. Boy were we wrong. After giving him the first bite, you would have thought we gave the child poison. He was shuttering, gagging, and dry heaving for what seemed like an entire minute. I really thought he was going to throw up. It took a few minutes but he was able to spit out everything that went in. And although it's about a month later, the only thing that has changed is that he can now spit out the food in about 10 seconds. We've tried rice cereal, barley cereal, rice with bananas, plane bananas, apple sauce and a few other things but they all get about the same reaction. Thankfully, the Doctor was pretty unconcerned about it at Micaiah's six month check-up so we're in no hurry to get him used to solid food. And since he was nearly seventeen pounds, it's not like he's going to wither away if he doesn't get it any time soon.

Yogurt, anyone?

>> Thursday, April 12, 2007

Orin has been on a Yogurt kick for the past month. And now that he's finally wanting to feed himself with a spoon (we went through a short period of him wanting us to feed him) he enjoys being able to eat it often. This day I left him alone for too long and he started having more fun that I expected. I think I'm finally getting better at pulling the camera out at these moments...

A Rough Way To Start A Birthday

Today is Orin's second birthday! They past two years have FLOWN by. It's amazing how wonderful these past two years have been. But poor Orin didn't have the best beginning to his birthday. Around 3:30am he woke up with SEVERE croup. We heard him crying, which doesn't happen often. When Damien went into his room he was standing on his bed crying hysterically. Micaiah had croup a few months ago, but it was different. We could tell he was having trouble breathing, but he wasn't crying or freaked out. But poor Orin was struggling with each breath and seemed to be choking. Damien said his first thought was that he had swallowed something. As soon as he brought him to me I knew it was croup. So my first thought was to bring him outside and tell Damien got the shower going. I remembered my mom mentioning that when parents would bring their kids to the ER by the time they got there the child would be better simply from breathing the outside, cold wet air. (A friend also mentioned to me that her pediatrician said to stick the child's face in the freezer!) Damien knew about running the shower, but he was pretty confused as to why I was bringing him outside. I think he thought I was nuts. :-) Damien still wasn't convinced it was croup and wanted to bring him to the ER. I didn't want Damien to worry so I agreed, but when I came inside Damien realized that Orin was already breathing a little better. Once we got into the bathroom Orin calmed down and finally was able to get some better breaths. I was surprised how scary it was, even though I knew exactly what was wrong. I can't imagine how a parent would feel if their child woke up with Orin's symptoms and they had never heard of croup. We got the humidifier going and brought the futon mattress into Orin's room so Damien could sleep in there with him. Orin was very excited (he was feeling better by this point) and wanted to sleep on it with Damien. He was so excited he had some trouble getting back to sleep. At one point Damien asked Orin if he wanted to sleep in his own bed and Orin said something to the effect of "No, I want to sleep in the bed with Daddy". Of course, this just melted Damien's heart. This was also one of the first times Orin really made a complete full sentence and original thought of his own. It was also the first time since Orin was very little that he slept with one of us. Normally if we put him in our bed he is WAY too excited to sleep. Damien has wanted him to sleep with us for a long time so I think he really enjoyed it. Poor Orin still sounds very "croupy" and cries every time he coughs. Hopefully we won't have the same eventful night tonight!
