Orin's 1st Bug & 1st VBS

>> Monday, June 29, 2009

Orin has been deathly afraid of bugs since I can remember. He can spot any size bug, even from far away and freaks out, yelling, "It's a bug, get it, get it," while running in the opposite direction. Micaiah has taken Orin's cue and gets even more hysterical. Today, I was in the bedroom while they were playing very nicely together in the den (that's always something to be excited about). Anyway, I suddenly hear Micaiah freak out and yell, "Orin, it's a bug, it's a bug by you!" Then I hear Orin say something about getting a napkin. What??? Normally they just run to me. Orin starts saying he'll get a napkin and he'll get it. So I just stay in the room to see what will happen. Well, wouldn't you know, Orin gets a napkin and kills that bug! Total shock. So, I'm hoping that he'll turn into a kid who likes to kill bugs so that when we're overseas and probably have more bugs than I want to imagine, he can be our bug killer (Since Damien hates it as much as me and we always vie over who has to do it). I told him I wanted to take a picture and he said, "Ok, only one picture mom." And as soon as the flash went off he was off to the trash to throw it away. Oh, well, it's not great, but at least I got one.Orin also had his first experience with VBS tonight. He's finally old enough to be involved in a real class. We've been so busy this month I haven't had the time to look for one. But driving today I saw a sign at a Christian school that said VBS was starting tonight. I called and confirmed. Well, when we showed up we notice that the school is actually connected to a Hispanic Church. So we walk in and we are literally the ONLY Caucasian people there. No joke. There are a ton of people there trying to register and I hear a mixture of English and Spanish. My biggest concern at that point is whether or not the curriculum (songs, story, etc...) will be in English. We register and walk into the gym where the opening assembly is and luckily the songs and words on the screen are in English. Whew! So he stayed. It was a night VBS which lasted until 9:15pm. It was supposed to end at 8:30pm but you know how the first day of VBS goes. It's always crazy. So I just hung out and watched the singing at the end. I love the fact that he doesn't yet notice that he looks any different. He seemed to have a blast and told me all about their story about Moses, that he made a lightning bug for craft, and that he caught the ball during their games. Earlier when I mentioned that he was going to go to VBS (which he kept calling PBS to be silly) I told him that there would be games which he was very excited about. When I picked him up he told me that he was disappointed because there weren't any games. I told him that he did have games when he was playing ball and then he tells me "But there weren't any computer games." I thought it was pretty funny that when I said 'games' he interpreted that to be computer games. He loves computer games and we only let him play an hour or so a week or he'd be on it all of the time. Oh, well. Hopefully tomorrow won't go over so much since their bedtime is 8:30pm.
