We just got back from Hong Kong! We had to leave the country again to renew our visas so we figured we'd make a little trip out of it this time. There are lots of really great discount airlines here so we can fly to a lot of places in Asia for really cheap. Damien has wanted to go to Hong Kong FOREVER so we decided to go there. If he could have chosen anywhere in the world to go that's it. It's only a 2 1/2 hour flight from Bangkok. So it was a dream trip for him. I had my doubts, but I was happy to go since he really wanted to. And wow, Hong Kong certainly won me over. I loved it. The city, the people, the food....everything. I didn't know this but it's built pretty much in the mountains. So there are hills and mountains all around, mixed in with high rises everywhere and it's right on the beach. Amazing. We pretty much ran around from 9am until almost midnight every day. The kids enjoyed it a lot too even though they were pretty exhausted by the end.
It was really hard for me to come back. I wonder if we had gone to HK six months ago if I would have loved it so much. I wonder if I loved it so much because we've been living in Chiang Mai for six months. You learn to live with the difficult things here...heat, no one speaking English, only a couple of American restaurants, few conveniences. I don't think I realized how much of a stress on me they were until we left and I think I was actually able to feel relaxed and comfortable. Everyone there spoke English. In Hong Kong I got my favorite food (Indian) for the first time in six months - they have "Indian" restaurants here, but it's actually more Pakistani and just isn't quite the same. Damien was able to get Chinese and Cantonese food (another thing that we haven't been able to find here). The kids still got lots of attention in Hong Kong, but much less touching.
I don't want to sound like I'm complaining. I'm thankful God brought us to Thailand and I know this is where we are meant to be right now. But it's still hard in some ways. Hard to come back with 5 days worth of laundry and know it will take me over a week to catch up. :-) We actually came back to a nice surprise of rain and cool weather... but unfortunately, laundry dries very very slowly in this weather...it can take two days, and I can only fit about 2 or 3 loads at a time on my drying racks. I'm sure after a few days I'll fee settled again and again find enjoyment in this amazing little city we're living in!
I have a million pictures from Hong Kong to post too! Just need to finish up Mimie's trip. Ugh, so behind!
