Mixin' Things Up!

>> Friday, April 22, 2011

We've been studying Thai for about 4 months now. Wow, I know I've said it before, but somehow time just seems to be flying by. We got off to a rough start with our language learning. We started with the tutor in January while we were still living in D-town. We moved into our house about 3 weeks later and spent the next 2 months trying to get settled. Although we kept meeting with our tutor it's amazing how difficult it is study Thai outside of class when you don't have a couch or a stove or beds for your kids. Shopping takes time here. It hasn't been until about the last month that we've really been able to study outside of class. Anyway, we've heard that's it's good to spice things up a bit and switch tutors after about every three months. So we've decided to really mix it up and we're going to take a Thai class at a University here. Most people in our group (Southeast Asia) are convinced that private tutors are the best way to learn a language. And since it is actually cheaper to do it that way here, we started off with one. Personally, I thought my learning style would be more appropriate for a classroom setting. So we're just going to try a 4 week long Thai class. It's 3 hours a day in the morning so I know my brain will just be mush for the rest of the day. With learning Thai (or learning any language) we've gone through so many ups and downs. You'll go through a week or two where you feel like you're making progress and then things get discouraging and you feel like you're going nowhere. Often, changing the way you are learning is just what you need to boost you to the next level. Orin is in school and we have someone to watch Micaiah and Sora in the morning. Please pray with us that these next four weeks are very helpful and encouraging while we continue to study. And after the class is over Damien will only have one more month until he can start working!
