Bump in the road

>> Wednesday, November 5, 2008

When you first start working on an adoption the first you hear/read is "Be prepared for 'bumps in the road." Meaning, there are so many things that have to be done that more likely than not you will run into something that will slow or even halt your process for a time. We're run into our first one. China has a lot (and I mean A LOT) of very specific rules and requirements. One of those is your annual salary. If we don't make a minimum amount of $$$ per year, we can't adopt from China. We have to have a letter from our employer stating our annual salary. Because our salary comes entirely from churches and individuals, it is not completely consistent and it is hard to figure out how much we make annually. On top of that, because we just recently took our assignment, we've only recently begun getting all of our support. At this point in time, our employer can't say that we make the amount that we need to make in our letter. We're somewhat close to the amount, but China won't even look at the application unless you hit or exceed that requirement. So, we're sort of stuck. We're talking to people, trying to figure out what we can do to "up" our salary, as well as talking to our adoption agency to possibly switch countries. Needless to say, it's hard not being able to push things forward as quickly as I'd like. We're continuing to gather the documents for our Home Study, but this 'bump' is definitely going to push us back a few weeks to a month or more. It will be disappointing to us if we can't adopt from China, but we know that it's not our choice - God already has a child for us. I'm just trying to be open and patient.
