Treatment of unwed mothers in South Korea

This is a VERY interesting article in the NY Times today about the treatment of unwed mothers in South Korea. The way this woman was treated after deciding to keep her baby (after giving him up for adoption and then going to get him 5 days later) is why the adoption and abortion rate in SK is so high. She was almost forced to have an abortion, ostracized by her family, turned down for 8 jobs because they said she was "dishonest" once they found out she was an unwed mother. The government does nothing. But what I'm even more confused about is where are the churches? It is estimated that 50% of people in SK proclaim to be Christians. Why are they doing nothing to help these women?

The article also gave these statistics which compared SK to the US.

In 2007, 7,774 babies were born out of wedlock in SK, 1.6 percent of all births.
In the US, nearly 40 percent of babies born in 2007 had unmarried mothers.

Nearly 96 percent of unwed pregnant women in South Korea choose abortion.

Of unmarried women who give birth in SK, about 70 percent are believed to give up their babies for adoption.
In the US, the figure is 1 percent.
