Bugs and More!

>> Wednesday, December 22, 2010

Somehow before we moved to Thailand Micaiah found out that people eat bugs here. And the child could not wait to get here and try some. Somehow we haven’t come across any. Well, I've noticed them hear and there but we were never really had the time to have the kids try them. When we were out in Chiang Rai this weekend we went to this amazing Saturday Walking Market that they have there. It went on and on and on and on. We could have stayed for hours. Even the kids enjoyed it.

Then I heard some chirping…and saw this.
Next to that cage, we saw this. I think it took me a few seconds to figure out what was going on. I mentioned it to the kids. We walked closer to get a better look and the woman offered Micaiah some. He jumped on the chance! And he LOVED them. He asked her for more so we bought him a bag. He was so excited and over the next few hours he ate almost the whole bag and would not stop talking about how much he loved them and thanking us over and over.

We took our first Tuk-tuk on the way home. They have a lot of them here in Chiang Mai, but it’s mostly tourists that use them. It was the easiest way to get back to our hotel so we took the change. The kids thought it was a blast.

I was really proud of Orin for trying one too…he wasn’t as thrilled. But he didn’t spit it our or anything. I don’t think Sora was a big fan but she was eating them if I gave them to her.
Here are some other pictures of the market.

I love cotton candy and I've actually been able to find it twice...once during Loy Krathong, and then at this market. Both times they tasted a little bitter because I think they put TONS of food coloring in it. But still, it's better than nothing. They make it right there in front of you. I've never seen one so big!
Random picture at the market.

Obviously people in Thailand love squid-on-a-stick because they sell it everywhere.

Micaiah, you are such a brave little boy. Those sure look too much like roaches to me. I don't know if I could eat them!! Love, Mimie
