Crossing the Border
>> Wednesday, December 29, 2010
I wanted to post a few pictures of when we did our visa run. Although some people suggested that we don't go to the market, we decided to go. I just couldn't go to a new country and not "explore" a little. And it was totally fine. I mean, it's not like it was necessarily fun, but I'm glad we went. And we've definitely had much worse times at touristy markets in places like Nogales, Mexico.
Walking towards Myanmar immigration. It's so confusing because in Thailand you drive on the left and in Myanmar you drive on the right. And, if you think about it, everything else derives from that. For example, in Thailand, the "up" escalator is on the left. So when you enter the other country you have to cross the street.

The border between the countries. Left, Myanmar, right Thailand.

When we first walked in we were totally accosted...by Tuk-tuk drives asking to take us places. At first I was thinking, "Ok, maybe this wasn't a good idea." But once I figured out if I was VERY firm with my "no" they would leave us alone. It was just quite a few lines of them that we had to get through.
Orin wanted the camera so the next few pictures are ones he took.

I was surprised to find that the market was full of Thai tourists. I don't think we saw one other Westerner. I guess a lot of things are cheaper to buy of there. There were tons of people selling cigarettes.

I thought this was cute.
It's funny to see things from this view. I always feel bad for the kids because they are so short and low to the ground they probably can't see much.
We stayed for about an hour and then left. We didn't buy anything because Damien didn't want to have to worry about declaring it in customs.

Going home!

It's amazing how long it takes to get through immigration. They have to take a picture of each person and enter a bunch of stuff into the computer. And since there are 5 of us it's even longer. I always feel bad for the people behind us. Micaiah was trying to entertain himself. :-)
As soon as I told Micaiah he was cute Orin wanted to do it too and have me to take a picture of him.

And we made it! Now the clock is ticking before we have to leave again in 90 days. Next time we're going to Hong Kong!
